Three Generations of
Thomas Lafayette GENTRY &
Sarah Elizabeth SPANGLER
Thomas Lafayette "Lafe" GENTRY was born in Keytesville, Chariton County, MO, the youngest of five children of Lafayette and Docia (ABNER) GENTRY. Family legend has been passed down that Lafe's father was involved in the earliest stages of the bloody Civil War and was one of the first casualties. Therefore, it was said, Lafe nor his father ever saw each other. For this, Lafe was supposed to possess divine powers, such as impeding the flow of blood on certain wounds, "witching" for water, removing warts, etc.
In 1863, Lafe's mother died of Cholera, which was prevalent at the time, leaving him and his siblings, orphans. His oldest sister, Nancy, 15 years of age, became head of the household and attempted to provide a home for the other children. Soon she married William Stewart Wooldridge, who with the entire family moved to Texas County to avoid the ravages of War. Here, Lafe grew to manhood and on August 11, 1887, took as his bride, Sarah Elizabeth SPANGLER, daughter of Robert Lee and Rebecca (THOMAS) SPANGLER. "Lizzie" was born in the Cumberland Mountains of Lee County VA, coming to Missouri with her parents and siblings in the 1880s. Lizzie was reared in the Shady Grove Community on the family homestead near Ann.
A Homestead was granted to Lafe and Lizzie on Feb. 23 1899, in Eastern Douglas County and here they set about to rear their family. Their homestead was located in the Pleasant Valley (Chicken Bristle) Community. To this union was born 14 children, 12 of whom lived to maturity. These are all shown below, with their extended families, as far as I have them. Grandma Lizzie loved to quilt and was very proficient. Even as her eyesight was failing, she quilted each of her children a quilt of the butterfly pattern and said that each stitch was sewn with a lockstitch of love.
Lafe and Lizzie were laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near where they spent their happiest years, rearing their family. My Grandparents didn't accumulate a vast fortune of worldly riches, but the love and affection for their children and grandchildren extends to the far corners of the land. They are respected by all who ever knew them. Lafe and Lizzie were true Christians in every sense of the word.
