Peter Nicholas Coble
Peter Nicholas Coble was born Feb 14, 1848 in Lawrence County, Missouri, the oldest son of Henry Franklin and Catherine (Holt) Coble. Two more sons were born, John Marion, in 1851 and Alfred Luther on 24 Mar 1854. After the death of his mother in 1854, due to complications of childbirth, the family came to the Eastern Douglas County area to be near maternal relatives for assistance in rearing the three small boys. Peter Nicholas was a small and fragile child, but quite vigorous for his size.
At the age of 17, Peter Nicholas enlisted as a private in Company H, 46th Missouri Inf Volunteers, under the command of Capt. Moses L Alsup. According to military records, he entered the service of his country at the height of 5 feet, 3 inches tall and a whopping 115 pounds. He served the Union cause well, being involved at the Battle of Vera Cruz, where several members of his Company were killed, including some of his cousins.
After the close of the War, he homesteaded 160 acres on Clifty Creek, in Wood Township, and began to make his mark in life. Here, near an everlasting spring, he erected a log cabin, which is still standing, in part, on the original homestead. On Dec 28 1868, he married Caroline Wood, daughter of James "Bushy" and Mary (Potter) Wood. During the ensuing years, improvements were added. Sawed lumber, as it became available, was used for siding to cover the chink filled logs to improve the warmth of the small cabin. Barns and out-buildings were erected and in the fertile area nearby, a huge garden was planted and tended for the family's source of winter food.
Here on the Coble homestead were born 5 children, all of whom lived to adulthood and reared families of their own. The oldest, Jane Frances married William H H Dugger and had a son, Harrison. Next came Henry Frank who married Clara Sallee and reared their family of ten children, on an adjoining farm. Mary married James Sloan and had 4 children. Next came James (Jim) who married Ethel Wilson and raised six children. John Wheaton married Lois Garver, but moved back to the prairie lands near Everton, MO to rear his family of four children.
On May 25 1883, Caroline passed away at the early age of 36 years leaving Peter with 5 children to rear. Jane the oldest, at 13, became the housekeeper and substitute mother for the other siblings. Peter never remarried, living the remainder of his lifetime alone. On August 19, 1912 he was granted a Civil War pension of $13.50 per month, increased to $90 per month on April 16, 1927. This was a huge increase, but it was of little consequence, as Peter Nicholas only lived a short 7 months after this.
On Nov 27 1927, Peter passed to his reward and was laid to rest next to his beloved Caroline in the Penner Cemetery of eastern Douglas County.
The original homestead of Peter Nicholas and Caroline Coble has never been out of the Coble family and still remains today, under Coble management. It was recently designated a Century Farm by the Century Farm Program, which is administered by the University of Missouri College of Agriculture. The homestead is now owned and operated by Dale and Diann Coble. Dale is a Gr-gr-grandson of Peter Nicholas and Caroline Wood Coble.
